The UP UPKJ laser is another mid-range projector that does a commendable job. We were a little disappointed with the range, but 600 square feet must do it for most users. But if you’re very ambitious about your outdoor lighting with big plans, then you’ll need something else.
The laser pulls in about 3mW, which is decent, though we’ve come across other projectors with a lower rating. One area the Up UPKJ shines is the installation part – it was super easy to do so.
The red and green dual laser looks great. The effects quality was also very good, there are 1000 dotted points, so you can expect some great effects especially during the night. Up UPKJ also boasts about using industrial grade materials as opposed to commercial grade materials used by their counterparts. This build quality is something that Up has managed to one-up their competition.

How do they Work?
It’s finally that time of year – Halloween, Christmas, New Year, one of those days when people try to forget how dreary and uneventful the rest of the year is and attempt to sneak in some joy and playfulness. Many choose to put some decorations, dolls, bells, lights and sound effects… some decorations are more intricate than others, but they all share that festive spirit.
Just like laser pointers or lab lasers. If you’ve ever wondered, LASER stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation. This means they make their light by pumping energy (this can be electricity, another light source, or some other source of energy) into what is called “optical gain medium”. This results in exciting the atoms within the medium and emission of light.
What makes lasers stand apart from other sources that radiate light, like fluorescent bulbs, is that their beams are focused using an electric field to control the way it is created and direct all the protons in one direction. This is the “simulated” part of our abbreviation.
However, instead of being immediately emitted, the light thus created keeps bouncing within the cavity between a pair of mirrors on either side, gathering more and more strength with each passing – it becomes amplified. Once the entirety of the medium is producing light, this is what we call saturation. The result is a very powerful and focused beam of light that escapes thanks to the fact that one of the mirrors is only partially reflective.
The light produced by lasers is monochromatic (one color), and it will be contingent on the type of the gain medium, but you can combine a couple or more lasers to get the effect you want.

Some Common Questions about Laser Christmas Lights
How Far Away Should I Install My Projector?
I advise putting the light 25-30 feet away from the house. It also depends on the street lighting and size of our house. If there is more street lighting you’ll want to put your laser light a lot closer. Putting it too far away can cause a dilute light affect that you won’t want.
Like I mentioned earlier 25-30 feet is more than enough space for your projector. Each projector can cover roughly 625 square feet of space. So if you have a single story home it will be more than enough, you’ll even get some of the snowflakes or star shower affects on your roof.
Are laser lights ok for a two story house?
Definitely. That being said I would look into buying more than one for different angles of the house. For example of your house has a lot of street lighting or already existing garden lights I would suggest going for 2 lights instead of just one. Also keep in mind corners will need another light as well.
Is the power connector for the laser lights wateproof?
All connectors are waterproof. This means they are safe from water, rain or snow. Most light systems come with extremely high quality sealing to protect the entire unit.
Do They Shine on Wood?
Yes, they do. Regardless of the surface, laser lights will do a good job illuminating the entire area without any issues. I’ve had mine point towards a large shed we keep in the backyard without any issues at all.
Are Laser Xmas Lights Safe to Use?
As with any laser, you need to be careful that you don’t let the light shine directly into your eyes. As for them cashing airplane crashes or blinding pilots at night that is utter nonsense. The range of these lights is only 40-50 feet at best and there are nowhere near the power required to actually blind someone far away.
Is there a Timer?
Yes, all the units we reviewed have a time that is great for setting up your lighting and forgetting about it. I usually set mine for about 7-8 hours so by the time I wake up in the morning it’s done and good to go.
Will These Work on a White House?
The answer is yes, they will. Regardless of the house or the material of the home they will work extremely effectively in keeping your home well light up. Which makes me wonder, who has an all black house. 😉
Can I Use Them on my Balcony?
The only issue with balconies is the distance. The light needs to be put at least 25-30 feet away for it to be effective. Without that distance you’re not going to be getting the same affect. Anything closer will also be a little bit dangerous and can shine into you eyes. If you could angle the light from the ground floor up than it should be ok.
Can You Hang Them on a Tree?
If you get the right angle down than yes you could. However they would need to be fastened to something otherwise the light will end up moving around. I would suggest putting them at an angle?
What is the Best Place to Put Your Laser Light?
I would opt for ground level at a 45 degree angle about 25-35 feet away from your house. You can adjust for power depending on the laser. Each surface of the house should get one light as well.
How Can I Avoid Theft of My Light?
By moving to a good neighborhood.
In all honesty, there is not much you can do to stop someone from stealing your laser light but than again if someone wanted to they could steal anything sitting out on your lawn. These units are fairly cheap and Christmas is a pretty sacred time, we have yet to hear of anyone actually having their lights stolen.
Are These Lights White or Multi Color?
While you can find more white ones in our white lights specific review or on our snowflake projectors, I would say that the best quality lights are the green and red variety which can easily be purchased anywhere. All of the products we reviewed come with Red, Green and Blue lights.
How Many Watts Does Each Projector Use?
These lights are designed to be both economically and environmentally minded. On average they use 0.0005 watts of power which means you could run about 50 laser lights with the average consumption of a home light bulb.
What Temperature are the Lights?
Made for outdoor use. It is waterproof and designed to operate -17F to 100F (-28 to +38 degrees Celsius).
Is There a Warranty on These Products?
Depends on the manufacturer but with Amazon you have at least two months of warranty before the product is returned, so the answer is yes.
What Kind of Power Cord Does it Use?
Just use the typical 3 prong power cord and you won’t have any problems with the setup. Also run an extension cord to help connect the lights together.
Do the Lights Twinkle or Move?
I would check the Amazon page for more information about which lights move and which don’t. I think there is a a preference for lights that move slightly but aren’t jumping around all over the place. If you spend a little bit more money you’ll definitely get the lights that can twinkle.
